We visited Foxy’s Cafe on a Thursday at lunchtime. The restaurant is located in a strip plaza near the beach on the West Coast of Florida. We were immediately greeted and told we could sit wherever we wanted. Our server was immediately present and paid close attention to our needs. The service was excellent.
The restaurant was clean, odor free, and well-appointed for the type of place it is. Overall, I scored the Restaurant 8/10 losing a point for the price/value and a point for overall food quality. Rating 8/10
I had a decision to make. Should I order the sandwich as shown or exchange the cole slaw for house-made chips or fries? I decided that for the sake of reviewing, I would always order the sandwich with whatever side was included. I splurged (??) and ordered a pickle spear for an additional 20 cents. I did my usual 20 questions with the server – Can I get the Roast Beef medium rare? Does it come with horseradish and au jus on the side? et etc… Turns out you have to ask for horseradish (the real kind – not creamy)
The food came out fairly quickly. The presentation was basic with the sandwich served in a basket lined with parchment paper.
The sandwich contained a light portion of beef. The meat was tender and moist but overcooked and lacking in flavor. It appeared to be a deli roll sliced thin.
The roll: As some may know, I am not a fan of corn meal on my Kimmelweck roll. The corn meal stayed on the top while the smattering of salt and caraway seeds fell off. When I moved the top to take the phone, half the toppings fell off. The roll was very dry but at least it was warm. The roll literally fell apart at the first bite, leaving me with bits of the roll. So disappointed.
The au jus was perhaps the worst I have ever experienced. It was beyond bland at I guessed the recipe was 1 beef bullion cube for a gallon of water. It was water with a slight yellow color.
The horseradish was good – not clear your sinuses, but it had good flavor and color.
My 20ยข pickle was the highlight of the sandwich. Rating 4/10 as the second-worst sandwich I have ever had in Florida.
The side was coleslaw. The freshness and texture were terrific. The seasoning was bland to the point of insipid. It appeared to be a cole slaw mix from the food service company with some mild cole slaw dressing. Not the bet – but based on the rating system, it scored higher than the sandwich Rating 5/10
Overall, Foxy’s Cafe scored a 17/30 rating and now ranks as second to worst in the Florida BOW ranking. We won’t go back and a no not recommend the Beef on Weck to anyone.
