On December 6, 2023, at 3:45 PM, we visited Grumpy Gators. The Beef on Weck was priced at $12.99, though sides were not included. The restaurant describes itself as “Grumpy’s is known for really home-cooked food! Specializing in Pizza, Burgers, Reubens, Fried Chick.” They also offer Labatt’s in bottles.
The Beef on Weck can be prepared to your preferred doneness; we opted for medium rare. The sandwich featured tender, hand-cut prime rib served on a roll with a crunchy crust and soft interior. The toppings were well-applied and stayed put throughout the meal. The au jus was a bit thin but had an authentic flavor. The pickle spear was a nice touch. The Horseradish was wonderful!!
Since sides weren’t included, I ordered fries, which turned out to be an excellent choice. They were fresh-cut, skin-on potatoes, cooked to perfection, served hot, and seasoned just right.
Grumpy Gators is housed in an older building with a low ceiling and somewhat random decorations. Our server was prompt, personable, and patient with all my questions. The food arrived quickly, and there were no unpleasant smells in the restaurant. The focal point is a large oval bar where most patrons gathered. However, one patron repeatedly asked my wife for a hug, encouraged by others at the bar, making the experience uncomfortable. It seemed like the individual had been overserved.
Overall, I would rate this restaurant a solid B.
